How Net Salary Is Calculated
The Net Salary Calculator converts your input salary to an annual figure, applies all deductions, and outputs net pay across all pay frequencies.
Step 1 – Convert to Annual Gross Salary: Regardless of the pay period selected, all calculations are first standardised to an annual gross figure:
- Hourly: Gross × Hours per Week × 52
- Weekly: Gross × 52
- Bi-Weekly: Gross × 26
- Monthly: Gross × 12
- Annual: Gross (used as-is)
Example: $25/hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000 annual gross
Step 2 – Calculate Each Deduction: Each deduction is applied as a percentage of the annual gross salary (or as a fixed amount for Other Deductions):
- Income Tax = Annual Gross × Tax Rate
- Social Security = Annual Gross × SS Rate
- Health Insurance = Annual Gross × HI Rate
- Retirement = Annual Gross × Retirement Rate
- Other Deductions = Fixed amount entered
Example at $50,000 gross with default rates:
- Income Tax (20%) = $10,000
- Social Security (7.5%) = $3,750
- Health Insurance (5%) = $2,500
- Retirement (5%) = $2,500
- Other Deductions = $500
- Total Deductions = $19,250
Step 3 – Calculate Net Annual Salary: Net Annual = Annual Gross − Total Deductions = $50,000 − $19,250 = $30,750
Step 4 – Break Down to All Pay Frequencies:
- Monthly Net = $30,750 ÷ 12 = $2,562.50
- Bi-Weekly Net = $30,750 ÷ 26 = $1,182.69
- Weekly Net = $30,750 ÷ 52 = $591.35
Step 5 – Calculate Take-Home Percentage: Take-Home % = (Net Annual ÷ Gross Annual) × 100 = ($30,750 ÷ $50,000) × 100 = 61.5%
