IRR Calculator – Calculate Internal Rate of Return Free Online

Internal Rate of Return (IRR) Calculator

Cash Flows

Enter the initial investment as a negative number (e.g., -10000), followed by cash flows.

Spluxly’s free online Internal Rate of Return (IRR) Calculator is a professional-grade investment analysis tool designed for financial analysts, business owners, project managers, investors, and students who need to determine the discount rate at which a series of cash flows breaks even in net present value terms. The Internal Rate of Return is the annualised effective compounded rate of return that makes the Net Present Value of all cash flows — both inflows and outflows — equal to exactly zero. It is one of the most widely used metrics in capital budgeting and investment evaluation because it expresses investment profitability as a single comparable percentage, making it straightforward to compare against a required rate of return or the cost of capital. A higher IRR relative to the hurdle rate indicates a more attractive investment. Enter your initial investment as a negative cash flow and add up to 20 future period cash flows — which can be positive for inflows or negative for additional outflows — and the calculator applies an iterative Newton-Raphson numerical method to compute the IRR to four decimal places. Whether you are evaluating a business project, a property investment, a venture capital opportunity, or any multi-period cash flow scenario, this calculator delivers a precise result in seconds. Completely free, no registration required.

How to Use the IRR Calculator Online

Calculating the internal rate of return takes just seconds. Follow these simple steps:

  • Enter Initial Investment – Type the initial cash outflow as a negative number (e.g., -$10,000) into the initial investment field; entering it as a negative value is essential for the IRR calculation to work correctly
  • Enter Period 1 Cash Flow – Type the expected cash inflow or outflow for the first period (e.g., $3,000) into the Period 1 field; use positive values for inflows and negative values for additional outflows
  • Add More Cash Flows – Click Add Cash Flow to insert additional period fields for each subsequent year or period; the calculator supports up to 20 cash flow periods
  • Remove Cash Flows (if needed) – Click Remove next to any period field to delete it; a minimum of two cash flow period fields must remain
  • Click Calculate IRR – The calculator applies the Newton-Raphson iterative method to find the discount rate at which NPV equals zero and returns the IRR as a percentage to four decimal places
  • Interpret the Result – Compare the IRR against your required rate of return or cost of capital; if the IRR exceeds the hurdle rate the investment is considered potentially worthwhile, if it falls below the hurdle rate the investment may not meet the required return threshold

How IRR Is Calculated

The IRR is the value of r that satisfies the following equation, where NPV equals zero:

IRR Definition Formula: 0 = −Initial Investment + Σ (Cash Flow_t ÷ (1 + IRR)^t)

Where:

  • Cash Flow_t = Cash flow in period t
  • t = Period number (1, 2, 3 … n)
  • IRR = Internal Rate of Return (the value being solved for)

Since this equation cannot be solved algebraically for IRR, the calculator uses the Newton-Raphson iterative numerical method to converge on the solution to four decimal places.

Newton-Raphson Iterative Method: Starting from an initial estimate, the method repeatedly refines the IRR approximation using: IRR_new = IRR_old − NPV(IRR_old) ÷ NPV'(IRR_old)

Until the NPV value converges to approximately zero.

Example for a $10,000 initial investment with cash flows of $3,000, $4,000, $4,000, and $3,000 over four periods:

PeriodCash FlowDiscounted at IRR
0−$10,000−$10,000.00
1$3,000$3,000 ÷ (1 + IRR)^1
2$4,000$4,000 ÷ (1 + IRR)^2
3$4,000$4,000 ÷ (1 + IRR)^3
4$3,000$3,000 ÷ (1 + IRR)^4

Solved IRR: approximately 12.66%

IRR Decision Rule:

IRR vs Hurdle RateInvestment Decision
IRR greater than hurdle rateAccept — investment exceeds required return
IRR equal to hurdle rateNeutral — investment exactly meets required return
IRR less than hurdle rateReject — investment does not meet required return

Why Use Spluxly’s IRR Calculator?

  • Newton-Raphson Iterative Solver – Uses the industry-standard Newton-Raphson numerical method to converge on the IRR to four decimal places, delivering a level of precision consistent with professional financial modelling software and academic finance tools
  • Up to 20 Cash Flow Periods – Supports up to 20 individual period cash flow entries with dynamic add and remove buttons, making the calculator suitable for both short-term two or three period projects and extended multi-year investment analyses
  • Positive and Negative Cash Flows – Accepts both positive inflows and negative outflows in any period, correctly handling complex investment structures that involve capital expenditures, maintenance costs, or other outflows in addition to revenue inflows across multiple periods
  • Four Decimal Place Precision – Returns the IRR to four decimal places (e.g., 12.6634%) for the precision required in formal investment proposals, financial models, and academic submissions
  • Clear Investment Decision Framework – The IRR result is most meaningful when compared against a hurdle rate or cost of capital; the supporting content clearly explains the accept, neutral, and reject decision rules for applying the IRR in practice
  • Dynamic Cash Flow Management – Period fields can be added with a single click and removed individually with a minimum of two fields always maintained, allowing the number of periods to be adjusted freely without resetting the entire calculation
  • 100% Free & Instant – No registration, no fees — your Internal Rate of Return to four decimal places with full iterative calculation and investment decision framework delivered in seconds
