Spluxly’s free online Stock Average Price Calculator is an essential investment tracking tool designed for retail investors, traders, and anyone who purchases the same stock across multiple transactions at different prices. Also known as a stock average down calculator or cost basis calculator, this tool allows you to record multiple stock purchases — each with a different number of shares and price per share — and instantly calculates your total investment value, total shares held, average cost per share, and total number of purchase transactions. Results are displayed in a clean purchase table alongside a visual chart showing investment distribution, individual purchase prices, share quantities, and cumulative investment across all entries. Each purchase entry can be individually removed using the trash icon, and the results update automatically as entries are added or deleted. How Stock Average Price Is Calculated
The Stock Average Price Calculator uses the weighted average cost method, which is the standard approach used in investment accounting and portfolio tracking.
Weighted Average Cost Formula:
Average Cost Per Share = Total Amount Invested ÷ Total Number of Shares
This accounts for the fact that different purchases involve different quantities of shares, so a simple arithmetic average of the prices would be inaccurate. The weighted average gives proportionally more influence to larger purchases.
Example with two purchases:
- Purchase 1: 10 shares at $25.75 = $257.50
- Purchase 2: 20 shares at $22.50 = $450.00
Total Investment = $257.50 + $450.00 = $707.50 Total Shares = 10 + 20 = 30 shares Average Cost Per Share = $707.50 ÷ 30 = $23.58
Example with three purchases (averaging down):
- Purchase 1: 50 shares at $40.00 = $2,000.00
- Purchase 2: 50 shares at $35.00 = $1,750.00
- Purchase 3: 100 shares at $30.00 = $3,000.00
Total Investment = $6,750.00 Total Shares = 200 Average Cost Per Share = $6,750.00 ÷ 200 = $33.75
Why Weighted Average Matters: If you bought 10 shares at $100 and 100 shares at $50, a simple average would give $75 — but your actual average cost is only $54.55, because the larger purchase at $50 dominates the total. The weighted average correctly reflects your true cost basis.
