Loan Term Calculator – Loan Payoff Duration Free

Advanced Loan Term Calculator

Spluxly’s free online Loan Term Calculator is a precise and flexible loan planning tool designed for borrowers, financial planners, and anyone who wants to determine exactly how long it will take to fully repay a loan based on a known payment amount. Unlike a standard EMI calculator that fixes the term and calculates the payment, or a loan amount calculator that fixes the payment and calculates the principal, this calculator works in a third direction — you enter the loan amount, interest rate, and the payment you plan to make per period, and it instantly calculates the number of periods required to fully repay the loan. Because the number of periods cannot be solved algebraically from the standard amortization formula, the calculator applies an iterative numerical method to converge on the precise loan term to two decimal places. Enter the loan principal, annual interest rate, periodic payment amount, preferred payment frequency — Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, or Annual — and preferred output unit — Years or Periods — and receive the full repayment timeline alongside total interest paid, total amount paid, and a toggleable amortization schedule for complete transparency. Whether you are planning a personal loan, comparing repayment scenarios, or simply checking how long your current payment pace will take to clear a balance, this calculator delivers an accurate answer in seconds. Completely free, no registration required.

How to Use the Loan Term Calculator Online

Calculating your loan repayment duration takes just seconds. Follow these simple steps:

  • Enter Loan Amount – Type the total principal loan amount (e.g., $10,000) into the loan amount field; decimals are accepted
  • Enter Annual Interest Rate – Type the annual interest rate as a percentage (e.g., 5%) into the interest rate field; decimals are accepted (e.g., 4.75%)
  • Enter Monthly Payment – Type the amount you plan to pay per period (e.g., $188.71) into the payment field; this must exceed the periodic interest charge for the loan to be repayable
  • Select Payment Frequency – Choose your payment schedule from the dropdown: Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, or Annual
  • Select Output Term Unit – Choose whether you want the result expressed in Years or Periods from the output toggle
  • Click Calculate Loan Term – Instantly receive the loan repayment duration, total interest paid, total amount paid, and a toggleable amortization schedule
  • View the Amortization Schedule – Click the amortization toggle to expand a full period-by-period table showing payment number, payment amount, principal component, interest component, and remaining balance for every period until the loan is cleared

Formula Used

Because the number of periods cannot be solved directly from the standard amortization formula, the calculator uses an iterative numerical method to find the exact term.

Standard Amortization Relationship: P = PMT × (1 − (1 + r)^(−n)) ÷ r

Where:

  • P = Loan amount (principal)
  • PMT = Periodic payment amount
  • r = Periodic interest rate (Annual Rate ÷ Payments per year)
  • n = Number of periods (the value being solved for)

Iterative Solution: The calculator starts with an initial estimate of n and iteratively refines it until the present value of all payments converges to the loan amount within a defined tolerance, returning the result to two decimal places.

Minimum Payment Requirement: For a loan to be repayable, the periodic payment must exceed the interest charged in the first period. If the payment is too low to cover even the first period’s interest, the loan balance will never decrease and no valid term can be computed.

Minimum Payment > Loan Amount × Periodic Rate

Example for a $10,000 loan at 5% annual interest with monthly payments of $188.71:

  • Monthly Rate: 5% ÷ 12 = 0.4167%
  • Minimum Monthly Payment: $10,000 × 0.004167 = $41.67
  • Calculated Loan Term: approximately 60 months (5 years)
  • Total Interest Paid: approximately $322.60
  • Total Amount Paid: approximately $10,322.60

Payment Amount vs Loan Term (at 5% annual, $10,000 loan, Monthly):

Monthly PaymentLoan TermTotal Interest
$150.0097 months$4,452.30
$188.7160 months$322.60
$250.0043 months$743.20
$500.0021 months$364.80

Why Use Spluxly’s Loan Term Calculator?

  • Iterative Numerical Solver – Uses an iterative numerical method to determine the exact number of periods required to repay the loan, solving the problem that cannot be expressed in a simple closed-form algebraic formula for the term variable
  • Four Payment Frequencies – Supports Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, and Annual payment schedules with correct periodic rate adjustments, making the calculator accurate for any loan structure regardless of how often payments are made
  • Years or Periods Output – A toggle lets you choose whether the loan term result is expressed in years or raw periods, giving you the format most useful for your specific planning or reporting needs
  • Full Amortization Schedule – A toggleable period-by-period table shows payment number, payment amount, principal component, interest component, and remaining balance for every period in the full repayment timeline
  • Minimum Payment Validation – Automatically detects when the entered payment is too low to ever repay the loan and alerts the user, preventing silent errors from payment amounts that fail to cover even the first period’s interest charge
  • Decimal Precision – Accepts decimal inputs for loan amount (e.g., $10,000.50), interest rate (e.g., 4.75%), and payment (e.g., $188.71), returning the loan term to two decimal places for precise repayment planning
  • 100% Free & Instant – No registration, no fees — your loan repayment duration, total interest, total payments, and full amortization schedule delivered in seconds
